The Nathaniel D. Yingling, M.D., Cancer Center, located on the Clearfield Hospital campus, began providing radiation oncology care to patients on Thursday, Jan. 25.
The therapy is offered at the center through an affiliation with Hahne Regional Cancer Center of DuBois Regional Medical Center. "We are pleased to now offer state-of-the-art radiation oncology in Clearfield. Residents of Clearfield and surrounding communities can receive the advanced cancer care they need--medical oncology and radiation oncology--close to home," Robert B. Murray III, president and chief executive officer of Clearfield Hospital, said. Radiation oncology uses a machine called a linear accelerator. This machine uses painless, high energy X-rays to damage cancer cells and stop them from growing and dividing. Rose Campbell, administrative manager of Hahne Regional Cancer Center, said the Nathaniel D. Yingling, M.D., Cancer Center offers the latest technology, namely Image-Guided Radiation Therapy. This cutting-edge treatment uses an advanced and highly precise stereotactic radiotherapy technology. Because of its improved targeting, IGRT allows for more aggressive treatment of cancerous cells. The enhanced accuracy of this treatment system will benefit a wide range of malignancies including prostate, lung, intra-abdominal, pelvic and head and neck sites. "IGRT is one of the best technologies any medical center can offer. We can now substantially improve patient safety, comfort and cure rates and protect healthy tissue while delivering more powerful doses to a tumor," Ms. Campbell said. Other methods of delivering radiation therapy, such as Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy and 3-D Conformal Radiation, are also offered in Clearfield. Joseph Pedersen, M.D., Ph.D., serves as the radiation oncologist at Clearfield. Radiation therapists and oncology nurses from Hahne Regional Cancer Center, under the direction of Ms. Campbell and Dr. Pedersen, provide care at the Clearfield facility. In addition to radiation therapy, the cancer center also houses Clearfield Hospital's Chemotherapy Clinic. Clearfield Hospital has provided medical oncology/chemotherapy care since the 1970s.
