The Clearfield Hospital Auxiliary hosted its 20th annual health fair for fourth graders on Tuesday, May 6, at the Clearfield Driving Park.

According to Ginny Johnson, chairman, 310 students from Clearfield Area School District, Penn-Grampian Elementary, Moshannon Valley School District, St. Francis School and Clearfield Alliance Christian School attended.

Students visited these learning stations: germs and hygiene, presented by Clearfield Hospital Laboratory and practical nursing students from the Clearfield County Career and Technology Center; how to grow your own vegetables and plants, presented by the Hobby Garden Club, Women’s Health Task Force and nursing students; information about wheelchairs presented by nursing students; and fitness and nutrition presented by nursing students.

In addition, Clearfield County District Attorney William A. Shaw Jr., assisted by McGruff the Crime Dog and nursing students, gave a presentation about safety.

Cathy Luke, a teacher at Bradford Elementary, has supported the health fair since its inception. She said she’s pleased with how the event has grown over the years.

She said when the health fair first started, students enjoyed the fitness station the most; today, the fourth graders seem more interested in the laboratory and wheelchair exercises.

“When the students return to school, there is a lot of discussion about what they learned. The hands-on activities are especially interesting,” she said.

Lynn Washburn, a teacher at Centre Elementary, said her students also enjoy the health fair.

“They look forward to it so much they can barely stand the excitement. We’ve never had a student misbehave during the event because they are so focused on learning,” she said.

In conjunction with the health fair, the Clearfield Hospital Auxiliary held a poster contest. The winners are: first place, Katelynne Daubs, Centre Elementary; second place, Logan Lykens, Clearfield Elementary; and third place, Cheyanne Collins, Clearfield Elementary; Katie Witherow, Moshannon Valley; and Carissa Bumbarger, Moshannon Valley.

Fourth place winners are Diane Thompson, Clearfield Elementary; Cheyenne Bone, Moshannon Valley; and Layne Hy, Clearfield Alliance Christian School.

The auxiliary thanks the individuals and businesses that contributed to the health fair.
