Varicose Vein Removal (Tri-Vex Procedure) (814) 765-8590 |
Varicose veins are twisted, enlarged veins that can occur anywhere a vein is close to your skin. These veins, by definition, do not function normally. Varicose veins occur most often in the legs. Symptoms of varicose veins include pain in the legs (often described as fullness, heaviness, and aching), visible, enlarged veins, mild swelling of the ankles, discolored brown skin at the ankle, or skin ulcers near the ankle. Varicose veins happen when the normal valves that exist in a vein no longer function. Blood then pools in the vein below the valve, causing a bulge in the vein. The Tri-Vex Procedure offers new, safer, more effective treatment to people who suffer from Varicose Veins. This procedure was developed in 1996 by Dr. Gregory Spitz, a General Surgeon in Chicago. The TriVex System is designed for use during a patented, clinically tested surgical technique for varicose vein removal called Transilluminated Power Phlebectomy. (Transilluminated means that light is passed through the skin, and phlebectomy is the medical term for vein removal.) In this procedure, the surgeon views the vein using a transilluminating light and removes it with a small powered surgical device. The Trivex procedure is done on an outpatient surgical basis where the patient is under light anesthesia or sedation. Painkiller is flushed under the skin, where the vein is. Not only does this act as an anesthetic, it also washes out any blood from the surgery, resulting in less bruising and less pain. The process requires just two tiny cuts, less than a half-inch long. A light goes into one and illuminates the veins beneath the skin. A cutting instrument called a resector goes into the other. The resector has a small rotating blade on the very tip that chews up the vein and suctions it out. According to Dr. Kavic, “This process is similar to liposuction.” Although varicose veins are unsightly and often extremely painful, many patients resist treating their varicose veins because they are afraid of the pain and recuperation time involved with surgery. “The Trivex Procedure offers patients a minimally invasive treatment that lets them walk out of the hospital the same day with few scars and be virtually pain-free within a couple of weeks,” explains Dr. Kavic. “Typical surgical procedures to remove the veins from the legs are long, extremely painful and sometimes not very successful.” Physicians and Providers |
